Knowledge about water and soil

The H.S.W. Bureau for applied and environmental geology GmbH was founded February 1991 in the hanseatic city Rostock, Germany as a specialistic Bureau for contaminated sites, soil protection and hydrogeology.
Our Team consists of specialised environmental geologist, civil and environmental protection engineers, environmental assistants, environmetal chemists and biologists.

Our proposition is the protection of resources.

Water, soil, air and the biological diversity have to be protected for the future generation. To this intention we contribute.

Contaminated sites in the New Federal States (East Germany)
At the time of the German Reunification at the beginning of the nineties extensive decontamination studies in areas, suspicious of contamination, and on waste disposal sites have been carried out in the region of the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
In Europe unparalleled redevelopments and stable measures of protection for contaminated and waste disposal sites have been accomplished.
The H.S.W. GmbH Rostock had a great impact on that devolopment. Since 1991 about 1000 polluted areas and old waste disposals in the New Laender have been processed by our company.
While finding practical solutions to an abundance of different problems we also developed extensive expertise.
This know-how is valuable and essential for the professional and competitive acquisition and removal of inherited pollution.


Particular expertises could be compiled in these areas:

  • approximately 300 decontamination inquiries for industrial, agricultural, military and public gas stations (for instance missile sites, realty of the german armed forces, realty of the Soviet forces and the National People Army, transport services),

  • app. 250 location appraisals, decontamination inquiries and rehabilitaion monitorings of urban and industrial realty (Deutsche Immobilien, Kwearner – Warnow – Shipyard, Hafen – Entwicklungsgesellschaft, Netto – supermarket, TREUHAND – realty),

  • app. 300 location appraisals, decontamination inquiries and monitorings of agricultural farms, agrochemical Centers, Enterprises of product refinement (Sugarfacilities, boiler houses), grounds for cattle and pig breeding

  • app. conceptual designs for rehabilitation and protection of old waste disposals for domestic and industrial waste, rehabilitation monitorings and professional construction management (for instance domestic waste disposal site Rostock – Dierkow, Langsdorf, Rügen),

  • app. 30 location appraisals, decontamintation inquiries and rehabilitation monitorings for petrolchemistry companies, tank farms in Wismar, petrolchemistry Schwedt,

  • app. 20 cenceptual designs for rehabilitation and protection of groundwatersupplies (among other things public transportation Rostock, old gas station Bad Doberan).


Our main focus lies on:
  • acquisition and investigation of inhertited burden and contaminated sites as well as execution of oriented decontamination inquiries in detail

  • application of numerical groundwater modells to get plausible pollution channels, optimization of decontamination strategies

  • formulation of decontamintaion programs as given by article 1 § 13 of the german soil conservation law for areas with harmful soil contamintaions and monitoring of technical measurements in connection with decontamination work

  • formulation of decontamination concepts regarding BGR 128 and the monitoring of work with technical measurements in contamined areas concerning the protection of labour

  • measuring and evaluation of waste fractions f.E. surplus soil, construction waste and wood batches as well as inquiry for possibilities concerning the installation of the matierial adapted to the site


Since 1991 a close cooperation with Nordum Institut for Environment and Chemical Analysis GmbH and Co KG has been established.
The H.S.W. Bureau for applied and environmental geology GmbH has been accredited for the following methods:
  • sample drawings of

  • waste water

  • stagnant water

  • groundwater

  • watercourse

  • alluvium

    • selective methods of
  • physical,

  • chemical,

  • physio-chemical testing of water, alluvium and soils regarding DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2000

The H.S.W. GmbH is also accredited as a waste broker (Broker Nr. MV0303901) according to §50 clause 1 of the circuit economy and waste law (KrW-/AbfG).

Since 2004 the H.S.W. GmbH also runs the „Soil Directing Office“ in the federal state Mecklenburg - Vorpommern. The Aim is to make a purposeful and economic use of the large amounts of surplus soil in the region. In particular cases also the removal of surplus soils is concerned. That way the disposal and construction costs are reduced and the environment is sustainably disencumbered.
